Short Story

My imaginative painting portrays the rolling pastures and serene landscapes of Southland, New Zealand, capturing the essence of farm life and the natural beauty of rural Aotearoa. The creation of this artwork spanned several months, inspired by the calm rhythm of grazing sheep and the sweeping skies above. Every brushstroke celebrates the harmony between land, animals, and the hands that tend them.

Story

Down near the back blocks of Southland, not far from Bluff, there was a sheep named Bruce, a real character. He wasn’t flashy, just your average woolly bugger with attitude. Bruce lived on a small farm where the wind never stopped blowing and the grass tasted faintly of salt from the sea. Every morning, the farmer would drive up on his quad yelling, “C’mon, you lot!” and Bruce would roll his eyes like a teenager being asked to help with the dishes. See, Bruce wasn’t keen on being just another sheep. He’d heard the farmer’s radio talking about Queenstown tourists doing all sorts of wild things: jet boating, bungy jumping, skydiving. So Bruce figured, “If those city jokers can do it, why can’t a Southland sheep?”One frosty morning, while the farmer was fixing a fence, Bruce snuck down to the creek. He climbed the old fence post, took a deep breath, and leapt SPLASH! Straight into the freezing water.

“Crikey!” he bleated, shaking off the chill. “That’s colder than a Dunedin winter!” The other sheep stared at him like he’d lost the plot. But Bruce stood proud, dripping wet and shivering, thinking he’d just completed the South Island’s first sheep bungy. Word spread fast. By the next week, the farmer had tourists pulling over to see “Bruce the Bluff Bungy Sheep.” He became a bit of a local legend. The farmer even made enough from selfies to buy a new fence post. And Bruce? He’s still down there somewhere, plotting his next adventure. Rumour has it he’s eyeing the Interislander next.
